I purchased the Surface Pro to use both at work and at home.

At the price point I got it at, I have something ultimately more versatile than an Android tablet, an iPad, or a Windows RT tablet. Of course, if you want a touch screen and can make use of the Wacom Digitizer- the Surface tends to be a much better proposition. At the $900 level, I would be looking into an entry level MacBook air instead, or perhaps a Lenovo system. Not because it is a bad product, it's because I didn't need another tablet or computer. I would definitely have regrets at $500, or even $900. I assumed some combination of gestures and clicking would get me to the menus I wanted, but those only existed in the version that comes with my copy of Microsoft Office 2013Conclusion:I have no regrets buying this at $287. I spent WAY too much time trying to figure out if I could do some operations in the Metro OneNote that simply were not possible. This is the users' first experience out of the box, and its not a good one.- Metro vs Desktop app parity is not there. The workaround is to create a local user, set the date manually, and then log in to your Microsoft account. However, since the date on the device isn't set (unless you connected to a corporate network running NTP), you get an error that you can't log in to your Microsoft account. For example: On first power up of the Surface, it asks you to log into your Microsoft account. Actually, Microsoft should have hired me to help out, since that is my career anyways ). There is some adjustment there, but it is not a bad browser - Software QA could have been better. I am learning to like the Metro (is it even called Metro anymore?) version of IE using touch on its own.

OneNote picks up my scraggly handwriting and converts it into text with very good accuracy, and my lower case 'y's have always been the awful point of my writing+ Full windows 8 is on this, but at this time I haven't really needed to utilize many desktop apps. + The handwriting recognition is bonkers good. Although metro apps are getting better and utilizing touch effectively, sometimes you just need a mouse to properly get things done.

So now that I got this in my hands (as well as a Touch Cover 2) I will give some points of feedback from my usage, and may update this over time:+ The Surface Pro definitely feels more like a laptop than a tablet to me. At a price difference of over $600 plus taxes more, the Surface Pro 2 seems unjustifiable. I knew it was full well a first generation as well as a last generation product. My thoughts going in to the purchase were slight concern about battery life and the dual stage kickstand that is on the Surface Pro 2. With a ton of perseverance, and my old student email account, I finally was able to snag one. You literally had to be in the right place at the right time. The problem was, finding stock of them seemed as hard as finding Bigfoot. There was talk that the Microsoft stores were clearing these out at a student discount price of $287. The original Microsoft Surface pro was the definition of an impulse buy.
